Pessary

What is a pessary?

Pessaries are a non-surgical option for treating pelvic organ prolapse (dropped bladder, uterus, rectum, bowel etc.) that can be used either short or long-term.

A pessary is a vaginal insert used to help support the pelvic organs.  When inserted, it helps to prevent prolapsed organs from dropping down into the vagina.

How is a pessary inserted?

Once you decide to try a pessary, you will have a pessary fitting where the best style and size of pessary will be chosen based off of your anatomy.

How do I maintain the pessary?

It is essential to visit your urogynecologist's office at regular intervals to have the pessary removed and cleaned (generally every 3 months).  If you are able, you should remove the pessary and clean it daily.

Is a pessary uncomfortable?

If fitted properly, a pessary should not be uncomfortable.

Can my pessary fall out?

It is possible for your pessary to fall out if it is not fit properly. You can clean and reinsert the pessary on your own or call to make an appointment to have it replaced/refitted.

Can I have sexual activity with my pessary in place?

It depends on which type of pessary you have in place.  If you are interested in being sexually active, a pessary can be selected for you that allows you to have sexual activity with it in place.  You can also opt to remove the pessary during sexual activity.

Will my pessary set off a metal detector?

No, it will not.
